I hear this concern almost weekly: "Is ChatGPT using my data?"

The answer depends on one setting most people don't know exists.

Here's how to check (takes 30 seconds):

  1. Open ChatGPT

  2. Click your initials (lower left corner)

  3. Click Settings

  4. Click Data Controls

  5. Find "Improve the model for everyone"

  6. Turn it OFF

That's it.

What this means:

  • ON = OpenAI uses your conversations to train their models

  • OFF = They don't

Default settings matter:

  • Free and basic ChatGPT accounts? Defaults to ON

  • Business and Enterprise accounts? Defaults to OFF

This same functionality exists in Claude. Go find it and turn it off if you're concerned about data privacy.

Your data can be misused anywhere. This is how you control it in ChatGPT.

P.S. If you're using AI in your business, make sure your team knows about this setting.
